Celebrate Earth Month with Sustainable Transportation

Source: LinkedIn

April is Earth Month! In observation, BTMO encourages you to learn about how your transportation choices affect us and our environment. A typical car produces 4.6 metric tons of CO2 per year[1]; there are over eight million vehicles[2] in Los Angeles, which accounts for about 20% of all emitted greenhouse gases (GHG) in the region[3]. Not only can GHG negatively impact our environment by trapping heat, decreasing air quality, and by causing extreme weather patterns, it can impact human health by increasing risk of respiratory diseases[4].

Practicing sustainable transportation is easy in Los Angeles! Sustainable transportation is any mode that does not use single occupancy driving, such as walking, biking, skating, scooting, carpooling, vanpooling, or using public transit. This Earth Day, April 22, you can practice sustainable transportation with free fares on BurbankBus, Metro bus, rail, and bike share, and Metrolink rides!

Find out how you make a difference when you choose sustainable transportation. Feel empowered when you choose one of these modes to get around:

Active (People-Powered) Transportation

Walking, biking, scooting, or skating is a breeze in Los Angeles, thanks to the sunny weather. Using active transportation can decrease GHG emission by about six to fourteen million tons per year[5]. If you don’t have a bike but would like to ride one, you can rent with Metro Bikeshare.

Public Transit

BurbankBus, LA Metro, and Metrolink are the main transit agencies for the City of Burbank. Compared to single occupancy driving, using transit reduces GHG emissions by 45% and reduces 37 million tons of CO2 annually[6]. You can check-out a transit map of the city on our website!

Carpooling and Vanpooling

The average car emits about 400 grams of CO2 per mile[7]. By sharing your ride, you can reduce the number of vehicles on the road and decrease GHG emissions emitted! Even two people in a car can reduce 2,000 pounds of GHGs per year[8].
