Celebrating Transit Equity Day

In honor of the civil rights leader Rosa Parks birthday, Los Angeles County Metro, Metrolink, and LADOT will provide free fares on Wednesday, February 4. Transit agencies honor the occasion every year with free rides on our system to acknowledge and celebrate Rosa Parks’ refusal to surrender her seat on a bus to a white passenger in Montgomery, Alabama, in 1955.  Her courage led to the Montgomery Bus Boycott by Black riders, helped power the emerging Civil Rights movement across the country, and led to the U.S. Supreme Court in 1956 ruling that bus segregation was unconstitutional.

Transit Equity Day was created to remind everyone that good public transit is a fundamental right that connects people to jobs, education, healthcare, culture, family, and the world around them.

“Transit Equity Day honors Rosa Parks’ legacy and the principle that everyone deserves access to reliable public transportation,” Metrolink Board Chair Doug Chaffee said. “Free-fare days open the door for more Southern Californians to experience Metrolink firsthand and see how regional rail can connect them to new opportunities by expanding their options and reducing barriers that limit mobility.”

There is no requirement to receive free fares on Metrolink, LADOT, and Metro rail and bus lines. To receive free rides on Metro Bike Share, use code 020406. EQUITY26 can be applied during checkout for free fares on Metro Micro.

In addition to Metro, Metrolink, and LADOT, Omnitrans, the Orange County Transportation Authority, the Riverside County Transportation Commission, the San Bernardino County Transportation Authority and the Ventura County Transportation Commission are also waiving transit fares for Transit Equity Day.
