Why Bike to Work Day Matters—More Than Just a Commute

Each May, National Bike Month invites us to take a closer look at how we move through our cities—and how small changes, like biking to work, can lead to major impacts. At BTMO, we see Bike to Work Day not just as a celebration, but as a call to action. It’s a chance to rethink how we commute, reclaim some joy in our daily routines, and support a healthier, more sustainable Burbank.

More Than Just a Workout

Riding a bike to work is one of the simplest ways to integrate physical activity into a busy schedule. Just 30 minutes of cycling can help reduce the risk of heart disease, lower blood pressure, and improve mobility. But the benefits go beyond the body. Studies show that regular cycling also boosts mental well-being. Reduce your stress and improve your focus, energy, and mood.

A Greener, Cleaner Commute

Every time you choose your bike over your car, you’re helping reduce harmful emissions. In fact, transportation is the largest contributor to greenhouse gas emissions in the U.S., most of which comes from cars and trucks. Biking produces zero emissions and helps alleviate local air quality issues that affect all of us, especially in car-heavy regions like Southern California.

In Burbank, our commitment to cleaner air and healthier communities starts with promoting alternatives to solo driving. And biking is one of the best tools we have.

Roll Back Your Spending

Gas, parking, maintenance, insurance… owning and driving a car can be expensive! Swapping even a few car trips each week for bike trips can result in noticeable cost savings over time.

How Burbank Is Making Biking Better

BTMO is proud to work alongside the City of Burbank and local partners to create a safer, more connected biking network. Here are just a few exciting developments:

Burbank Channel Bikeway: Completed in 2021, this scenic multi-use path runs from the Downtown Burbank Metrolink Station to Alameda Avenue, giving riders a safe, low-stress commuting route (City of Burbank).

Front Street Protected Bikeway: Currently under construction, this mile-long protected bike lane will improve connectivity and safety near the Downtown Burbank Metrolink Station (Streetsblog LA).

Burbank BikeStop: Located at the Metrolink Station, this indoor bike parking facility offers secure, free storage, repair stands, and even vending machines stocked with bike tools and snacks (City of Burbank).

These projects are investments in access, safety, and equity for current and future riders.
