Did you know that skateboarding is not just a fun hobby or Olympic sport, but also a form of active transportation? Active transportation is any method of transportation that required human power for movement, including biking and walking. The benefits of active transportation include:

  • Health – Active transportation is a form of exercise that can reduce health risks like diabetes, heart disease, and stress.
  • Environmental Impacts – By choosing active transportation over vehicle travel, you are cutting vehicle emissions that are harmful to our lungs and the Earth.
  • Cost Savings – Less money spent on gas means more money into your pocket!
  • Community – Riding with friends and family can create new memories that would not be possible if you were to drive alone to your destination. You can see the city in a new light and have fun while you’re at it!

L.A. City Council Approves Camera Enforcement of Bus Only Lanes

On October 8, L.A. City Council gave the go-ahead for an automated bus lane enforcement pilot. After an outreach period and 60-day warning period, L.A. City will issue citations to anyone illegally parked in a bus lane.

Cars parked illegally will be identified automatically through on-bus cameras. This idea comes after recent state legislation allowed state-wide use of on-bus cameras to ticket drivers parked in bus-only lanes and bus stops.

Next steps include City Council’s approval of an ordinance to set fines for illegally parking in a bus lane (the base fine currently sits $293). Money from citations will go to Metro and L.A. City to improve safe streets mobility infrastructure like speed bumps.

Metro Ridership Surpasses the 1-Million Mark for the 22nd Straight Month of Growth

September was the 22nd consistent month of growth for Metro ridership! More specifically, Metro saw over a million average weekday boardings last month across rail and bus lines.

The increase in ridership can be attributed to Metro ridership programs such as the GoPass, which offers a free transit pass to K-14 students at participating schools. For more information on the GoPass, visit metro.net/riding/fares/gopass/.

Increased ridership may also be due to public safety improvement initiatives, like increasing Metro Ambassadors and uniformed personnel on systems.

A message from Metro:

“Thank you to everyone for riding and supporting public transit. Your ridership helps us get the resources we need and helps our region battle traffic and smog! We very much appreciate your business as we work to improve each and every day.”
